Which are the best shingles to use for my shed?

There are basically 2 types of shingles.
  1. Three tab shingles
  2. Architectural shingles
I strongly recommend using the architectural shingles because they are better and will last longer. They are usually rated at 30+ years. Some are rated for longer. They will cost more than 3 tab shingles but they are worth the extra cost for 2 reasons.
  • They aren't as likely to blow up from the wind
  • They last longer.
They don't blow up from the wind because they are thicker and heavier. They last longer for the same reason.

The 3 tab shingles will wear out in the tab area on the lower shingle because it's only 1 layer thick there. Where as the architectural shingles don't have the tab slot and are 2 layers thick everywhere. Plus, without the tab water has fewer places to seep into. As this photo from a recent re-roof shows.
