FAQ: How to install a skylight

Question:

What is the best way to install a skylight?

Answer:

Installing a skylight is easy. The hard part in making sure it doesn’t leak.

You can buy a 22 1/2 inch wide skylight to fit between trusses (24 inch on center) or larger one and let the truss cross through the skylight cutout. For example a 36×36.

Typically you would position the skylight, mark and cut the hole in the sheeting and frame around it on the bottom side. Nail the skylight to the roof sheeting, then install the felt paper and use roofing tar to seal that joint with the flashing of the skylight.

Then install the shingles and use lots of roofing tar to prevent leaking.
